Malaysia Continues Asset Recovery in 1MDB Scandal as Legal Proceedings Persist

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — September 5, 2026 — Malaysia's ongoing efforts to recover assets linked to the 1MDB financial scandal remain a focal point as legal proceedings continue against key figures, including former Prime Minister Najib Razak and fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low. The scandal, which first surfaced in 2015, involved the alleged misappropriation of billions of dollars from the state investment fund 1MDB.

Investigations by Malaysian authorities, the U.S. Department of Justice, and other agencies have traced over $4.5 billion in assets linked to the scandal. Recoveries have included luxury properties in New York and Los Angeles, a private jet, and artwork by renowned artists. However, billions remain unaccounted for, and some assets are still contested in courts.

Najib Razak, who served as prime minister from 2009 to 2018, was convicted in 2020 on charges of abuse of power, money laundering, and criminal breach of trust related to SRC International, a former 1MDB subsidiary. He was initially sentenced to 12 years in prison, but a partial pardon in 2024 reduced his sentence to six years. Najib maintains his innocence and is appealing other charges.

Jho Low, considered the central figure in orchestrating the scheme, faces charges in multiple jurisdictions and remains at large, believed to be in China. Efforts to extradite him have been unsuccessful.

Goldman Sachs, which played a pivotal role in 1MDB's bond issuances, agreed in 2020 to pay $3.9 billion to Malaysian authorities as part of a settlement to resolve probes into its role. The bank also paid $2.9 billion in penalties to global regulators, including the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Federal Reserve. The bank has since revised its compliance procedures and cooperated with authorities.

The scandal has had profound political and economic repercussions in Malaysia, contributing to Najib's electoral defeat in 2018 and prompting reforms in governance and anti-corruption measures. As of 2026, Malaysia continues to pursue asset recovery and legal actions, underscoring the importance of transparency and accountability in public finance.
